Child Care Guide

When we think of child care we think of small children and babies but in today's world there is an ever increasing need for child care for older children and teenagers. Teenagers are particularly vulnerable when it comes to bullying, crime and drugs, even the most well behaved child can be tempted when left on the street with friends if you're at work.

Child care for teenagers is a totally different thing than child care for babies and small children, they don't need looking after the same way but rather they need a place to go where they can hang out with people of similar age and take part in various activities to reduce boredom and thus keeping them from trouble. So what options are there open to parents looking for child care for their teenager?

After school sports clubs

Many schools now offer after school clubs for both girls and boys, they will stay after school ends and take part in range of different sporting activities, these range from football, rugby and basketball for boys to netball and badminton for girls. Many schools now have a fitness center where children can go after school for a couple of hours and work out using various pieces of equipment, these activities are usually watched over by teachers or coaches.

Youth clubs or centers

After school youth clubs are generally run by volunteers in local community centers or halls, because they are volunteers they are usually parents and as such have no special training or qualifications other than being parents themselves.

A small charge will usually be made for children attending this type of club but the charge is usually minimal. Children will have a safe place to go for a few hours and there will usually be activities such as playing pool, watching videos and playing video games. A snack bar will generally be available where your children can purchase snacks and drinks.

Y.M.C.A

Community service programs such as the Y.M.C.A offer teenagers a place to go in between school ending and parents getting home from work, various activities will be on offer with programs including sports, arts and drama, they will also provide a quiet place to study if your child wishes to do homework.

Many of these centers are run by volunteers and donations are usually asked for in exchange for providing a safe environment for your child to stay. Snack bars which provide food and drinks are usually available so make sure your child has a little spending money.

Some of the bigger Y.M.C.A organisations will also offer summer holiday programs where your child can spend the day or week taking part in various activity programs.

A popular choice among teenagers are the camping trips that many of the larger Y.M.C.A `s offer, these trips are both fun and educational and your child will learn new skills and grow in confidence. Some will offer specific sessions such as academics, sports, arts and leadership skill building. Programs and activities such as these are run by qualified professionals with the aid of volunteers.
